As we celebrate #AAPI Heritage Month, we’re sharing a glimpse into the family cultural journey of Katie Marcussen and its impact on her professional and personal life. Katie serves as the Digital Marketing Manager at Red Roof, with her cultural roots lying in South Korea, proudly identifying as Korean American. Katie’s grandmother's migration story is one of pivotal significance (pictured). Originating from Daejeon, she made the bold decision to relocate to the United States with her young family in 1968. This move not only represented a geographical transition but also symbolized a profound shift in her family's trajectory. It paved the way for a better life, offering opportunities for growth and prosperity, particularly in education. Katie’s mother vividly recalls being the only person of Asian descent in her entire American high school—an experience that still resonates with them today, sparking meaningful conversations about identity and belonging. Some of Katie’s most cherished memories with her mother and grandmother revolve around preparing food, where they skillfully blended Korean and American cuisines. Learning to make kimchi while also mastering their family’s secret apple pie recipe, encapsulates the harmonious blend of her cultural heritage. Navigating the intersection of two cultures has been a defining aspect of Katie's life. Growing up, she learned of her grandmother's resilience as she grappled with language barriers and cultural adjustments in a new country. Her tenacity and perseverance in the face of adversity left an indelible mark on Katie, instilling within her a sense of determination and empathy. As we mark AAPI Heritage Month, Red Roof is committed to fostering greater awareness and understanding of our diverse communities. By sharing our stories and embracing our cultural heritage, we can contribute to a workplace and world where diversity is not only acknowledged but also celebrated.

With great honor, we showcase John Park, our distinguished Vice President of Finance at Red Roof. As we mark #AAPI month, we take pride in highlighting John's five years of dedicated service. With a wealth of experience, he oversees all Accounting and Finance departments within our company, exemplifying excellence in leadership. Identifying as Korean-American, John's cultural journey traverses continents, starting from his birthplace in Los Angeles, CA, to exploring diverse cultures across multiple countries and cities in the United States. However, his family roots are firmly embedded in South Korea's rich heritage, particularly in the southeastern region, renowned for preserving traditional artifacts spanning over 5,000 years. John's formative years in Seoul, spanning middle and high school, profoundly shaped his personal identity and his professional perspective in significant ways. Immersed in South Korean culture, he developed a deep appreciation for academia and a profound respect for others. Respect, deeply ingrained in every aspect of daily life, was more than a concept—it was a way of being. In Korea, respect is embedded in language and greetings, with various levels of respectful communication based on age, relations, title, and accomplishments. From bowing to shaking hands, showing respect became second nature to John due to his upbringing. Surrounded by a community that valued these principles, he absorbed them, laying the foundation for his future endeavors. Looking ahead, John remains steadfast in his commitment to excellence, embodying the spirit of diversity and inclusivity that defines Red Roof's culture. His values serve as a testament to the power of embracing one's heritage and celebrating the experiences that make us unique.
