The Marrillia team is especially proud to have completed this project with Studio Kremer Architects for Jefferson County Public Schools.
Studio Kremer enjoyed hosting the Central Kentucky Chapter of the AIA this Tuesday as we toured Wilkerson Elementary School. Wilkerson is one of the first new schools JCPS constructed in the past decade, opened in 2022, and we were able to show some elements of this school that were unique in the district when it opened: a gym that also serves as a storm shelter; classrooms grouped in 'neighborhoods' around breakout, resource, and intervention spaces; a makerspace featured in the lobby; and mechanical platforms that allow maintenance to occur without disturbing learning. SKA Architect Sarah Dalga led the tour and described many other aspects of the project that made it unique - from careful relationships of spaces to foster visual surveillance and sound separation to strategic placement of breakout spaces to allow teachers choices about where and how learning can be encouraged. What *can't* be shown is the story of the school's development: designed and documented during our COVID office closure and constructed through the worst of the supply chain challenges, Wilkerson is one we'll remember for a long time!

AWARDED! – Marrillia Design and Construction has been selected by Turner Construction Company and the University of Kentucky to complete the Phase I General Trades scope of work for the new 500,000 sf Michael D. Rankin MD Health Education Building prominently located at the intersection of Huguelet and University Drives. A corner entry plaza will integrate it into existing circulation patterns and green spaces. A setback along University Drive will preserve oak trees and create green space. This building will serve as a gateway to the medical campus, featuring vertical green terraces promoting wellness. It will be seven to eight stories tall, transitioning gracefully from the residential areas to the medical campus. As the largest academic building in the history of UK, the Michael D. Rankin M.D. Health Education Building will be a canvas for dynamic learning, allowing us to adapt to evolving educational needs while maintaining accreditation standards. Currently, 77% of the space is focused on educational activities, including 25% devoted to classrooms and learning labs and 34% for simulation and experiential learning.
