The panel will be 3:30-5PM on Friday, April 11, in the Worsham Theater in the UK Student Center. A panel discussion of service learning by young people volunteering in Appalachia as couriers with the Frontier Nursing Service will feature a reading from the just-published book Unbridled Service: Growing Up and Giving Back as a Frontier Nursing Service Courier, 1928-2010 by author Anne Z. The panel on April 11, 3:30-5PM in the Worsham Theater will be moderated by Director of the UK Appalachian Center and Appalachian Studies Program Ann Kingsolver. Following the panel will be a booksigning by Anne Cockerham of Unbridled Service and a reception sponsored by the UK Appalachian Center, 5:30-7PM, at the Morris Book Shop, 882 E. High Street, in Lexington. Dr. Cockerham is Associate Dean for Midwifery and Women’s Health and Professor of History, Frontier Nursing University. This event should be of particular note to those interested in rural health care, women’s health, Appalachian Studies, Kentucky history, and service learning. The Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, Kentucky, is a private, non-profit, non-residential school of nursing with a mission to educate nurses to become competent, entrepreneurial, ethical and compassionate nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners who are leaders in the primary care of women and families with an emphasis on underserved and rural populations. The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center works to strengthen relationships between the colleges at the University of Kentucky and the communities in the 54 Appalachian counties of Kentucky by creating community partnerships in collaborative projects documenting and addressing the region’s particular contributions and challenges in a global context.
