Event Description:
The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center is cosponsoring a ¡Viva México! event with UK’s College of Arts and Sciences on April 12th, 2014. The event will take place in the Worsham Theater at the University of Kentucky Student Center and includes a 7:00pm concert by the band Appalatin followed by the debut of Las Voces de los Apalaches, a community-based theater performance at 8:30pm. The script was developed based on conversations and workshops with Latino/a residents of Appalachian Kentucky. Appalatin plays roots music bridging Latin American and Appalachian folk traditions. The band’s sound is the unique blend of several cultures, but most importantly - world. The six-member band uses all acoustic instrumentation that features classical and steel string guitars; wooden flutes and pan flutes; harmonica; mandolin; charango (Andean string instrument); bass; and a myriad of percussion (congas, bongos, cajon, maracas, cow-bell and guiro to name a few). While they call Louisville, Kentucky home, each member has found a unique path to arrive there. Members include Yani Vozos (Kentucky), Marlon Obando (Nicaragua), Fernando Moya (Ecuador), Steve Sizemore (Kentucky), Luke McIntosh (Australia) (not pictured), and Luis de Leon (Mexico/Guatemala). Appalatin independently released its first album in March 2011 and has since been met with considerable praise. The band has been featured on 91.9 FM WFPK's "Live Lunch", West Virginia Public Radio's “Inside Appalachia” and LEO Weekly's 15th Anniversary Music Issue (July 2011). Their song “Canta Mi Gente” was recently featured alongside such artists as Ryan Adams, Dr. Dog, and Chris Isaak on the WFPK Live Volume 6 CD. Appalatin is listed in the Kentucky Arts Council's Performing Artist Directory and performs at regional schools and cultural events in the Ohio Valley region. Appalatin has performed on stage at the River Roots Music Festival in Madison, IN, Culturefest in Pipestem, WV, Headliners Music Hall and Bomhard Theater in Louisville, KY and has shared the stage with artists such as bluegrass legend Sam Bush, Black Lilies, Hays Carll, 23 String Band, Justin Lewis, Songs of Water, The Tillers, Dubtonic Kru, and many more. “Las Voces de los Apalaches” is an effort by the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center to document experiences and perspectives of Latino/a residents of Appalachian Kentucky. The project is part of a larger initiative of the Appalachian Center focusing on the contributions of diverse voices in Appalachian Kentucky. For the play script “Las Voces de los Apalaches,” Latino/a residents of Appalachian Kentucky have – over the past year -- shared their stories of everyday life and what it has meant to choose to live in mountain communities. The perspectives shared through the play counter many stereotypes. This staged reading of “Las Voces de los Apalaches” introduces a play script and multimedia background that will be available as a free resource to circulate to schools and community organizations in Appalachian Kentucky for performances and discussions sharing in the larger project of exchanging perspectives and better understanding the many voices of Kentuckians. The UK Appalachian Center is also developing the stories into a special section of an upcoming edition of La Voz that will focus on Latino/a residents of Appalachian Kentucky. Just outside the Worsham Theater, from 6:30-9pm on April 12, community organizations supporting diversity in Kentucky will have tables with resource information in Spanish and English, and Appalatin will have CDs for sale. The University of Kentucky College of Arts & Sciences Passport to the World Program has provided partial funding for the April 12th event in its 2013-2014 ¡Viva México! Series. The Passport to the World Program enables the College to embark on year-long explorations of the culture and history of a particular region or country. The program engages the community in crucial global conversations through public lectures, cultural events, and course work. Past year-long programs have focused on South Africa, China, and Russia. This year’s ¡Viva México! events have been organized by Professors Francie Chassen-López and Chris Pool. The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center works to strengthen relationships between the colleges at the University of Kentucky and the communities in the 54 Appalachian counties of Kentucky by creating community partnerships in collaborative projects documenting and addressing the region’s particular contributions and challenges in a global context. For more information about the “Las Voces de los Apalaches” Kentucky visit the Center online at Appalachiancenter.as.uky.edu or contact the Program Coordinator, Shane Barton, at

. Ann Kingsolver, the Appalachian Center Director, originated this project, and the lead staffperson on the project has been Pedro Santiago Martínez. Many collaborators have made “Las Voces de los Apalaches” possible, and they will be thanked at the performance and in the subsequent circulating play script and multimedia CD, which will have an accompanying website.
